Conan Did an Entire Show in Jeggings

12.03.10 Written by Matt

While discussing fashion with Tim Gunn during Wednesday night’s show, Conan O’Brien professed his love for women in jeggings, and was shocked when Gunn told him that some men wore them as well. One thing led to another, and Conan ended up doing last night’s show wearing a pair of jeggings. I approve of the buzzworthy gag, but I’m kinda pissed about having to write the word “jeggings” several times.

The video below is highly recommended. It’s not every day you get to see a bearded six-foot-five redhead in jeggings try to set up a monologue joke with a straight face. And if you DO see that every day, yikes. That must be some weird-ass hybrid of Dublin and West Hollywood.

Tim Gunn to Gay Teens: It Gets Better

10.06.10 Written by Matt

Here’s Tim Gunn’s contribution to the It Gets Better Project. In case you’ve been living under a rock, the rash of young gay people getting bullied and committing suicide inspired sex columnist Dan Savage to start a video campaign with a simple message for LBGT teens: it gets better. In this video, Gunn gets choked up as he talks about his own suicide attempt when he was 17, and — much to my disappointment — at no point does he chastise gay teens to “Make it work!”

Anyway, I’m not gay, and I’ve certainly gotten my fair share of lectures for calling things “gay” when I mean “stupid” or “lame,” but I can’t say enough how great this project is. Not just for gay teens, but for ALL young people who get ridiculed or bullied for being different or having an identity that goes against the rushing current of teenage groupthink. Seriously, teenagers are the WORST human beings on the planet. We have those A-holes to thank for the popularity of Twilight and Justin Bieber. I’d rather visit a retirement home than a high school.

Wow, it really DOES get better.

FABULOUS LINKS FROM NPH & TIM GUNN

Makin’ it work! According to Neil Patrick Harris’s Twitter feed (which I recommend), Tim Gunn on the set of “How I Met Your Mother” is the “best guest star EVER!” [@ActuallyNPH]

Six Awesome TV Characters Who Deserve Their Own Show. I agree; all of these characters are awesome, particularly Creed from “The Office” and Jane Lynch’s character in “Glee.” But part of what makes the characters so great is that we only get them in small doses. [Gunaxin]

shark-tattooBest. Tattoo. EVER. “I do say, old chap, I’m the deadliest creature in the sea. Champagne?” [Foggy Monocle via F Yeah Sharks]

The faces behind the voices of famous cartoons. Wait a second, Uncle Phil was Shredder?!?!? [Unreality Mag]

How to ensure your children give you the worst senior care possible: A Minnesota linguist spoke ONLY Klingon to his infant son for the first three years of his life to see if babies would learn Klingon like any regular human language. Wheeee! Babies are fun to experiment on! [boing boing]

Their parents probably taught them Klingon. A woman dressed as Pikachu accepted a marriage proposal from a man dressed as Raichu, which my nerd friends tell me is another kind of Pokemon. [Topless Robot]

‘Modern Family’ to get somehow even better. On the heels of the announcement that Ed Norton and Elizabeth Banks would both have guest appearances on the show, the newest addition to the extended family will be Fred Willard, perfectly cast as Ty Burrell’s father. [Fancast]

TIM GUNN IN THE IRON MAN SUIT: SURE, OKAY

05.22.09 Written by Matt

tim-gunn-iron-man“Make it work!  No seriously, how do you make it fly and shoot missiles?”

Marvel Comics is making a comic book about Fashion Week in New York City in which Tim Gunn of “Project Runway” will don the Iron Man suit.  This is actually happening, people. From the New York Times:tim-gunn-marvel

On Aug. 26, Marvel will release the first issue of “Models Inc.,” a sartorially minded mini-series that unites some of its fashion-friendly supporting characters and pushes them into new starring roles.  The runway divas include Millicent Collins (a k a Millie the Model), Patsy Walker, also known as the superheroine Hellcat, and Mary Jane, the model-turned actress who is the sometimes wife of Peter Parker, the Amazing Spider-Man.

But what would [they] be without someone to guide them? Enter Tim Gunn of “Project Runway.” In the debut issue’s second story, Mr. Gunn becomes an action figure — jumping into Iron Man’s suit of armor to save a fashion exhibition from evildoers.

Sounds like a great idea.  When I think about the bitchy women and gay men who love fashion, I think about how much they all love comic books.  But can we do something about this Iron Man suit, people?  I need something a little more slimming, and red and gold is SO last season.
