Tina Fey on ‘SNL’ with Stefon & Michael Bolton

05.09.11 Written by Matt

Tina Fey hosted the Mother’s Day episode of “Saturday Night Live” this weekend (with an assist from fellow preggo Maya Rudolph), but she was overshadowed by an appearance from Bill Hader’s Stefon and Michael Bolton dressed as a pirate (see videos below). My only real complaint is that Fey didn’t join Seth Meyers for what turned out to be a strong Weekend Update, yet her Sarah Palin impression was shoehorned into an unnecessary sketch about the Republican presidential debate.

Overall, it was a perfectly fine episode of “SNL,” which means that there were a couple good laughs but also some sketches that allow people to say things like “People still watch SNL?” and “SNL hasn’t been funny since Will Ferrell left / John Belushi died / Joe Piscopo’s foray into movies.” I get it, you’re too cool to enjoy things. Life must be wonderful in your white-framed sunglasses and skinny jeans.

Weekend Preview: ‘The Day We Died’

05.06.11 Written by Matt

Fringe (Fox, Friday) — Season finale. Tonight’s episode is titled “The Day We Died,” and the “Fringe” fan community is so excited that they’ve been been breathing into paper bags all day. I posted the creepy trailer for the finale earlier this week; you can watch another two-minute clip on the next page.

Saturday Night Live (NBC) — Tina Fey hosts, with musical guest Ellie Goulding. Once again, I have no idea who the musical guest is, but she apparently played at the royal wedding, so I’m guessing she’s British. Not like it matters: I’m just going to fast forward through her numbers when I watch this on Sunday morning. (Watch Fey’s promos with Kristen Wiig on the next page.)

The Amazing Race (CBS, Sunday) — Season finale. Few things give me greater pleasure than my complete and total ignorance of all things CBS. I relish that blind spot.

CSI: Miami (CBS, Sunday) — Season finale. Once more, with feeling.

Lady Gaga Presents the Monster Ball Tour: At Madison Square Garden (HBO) — Dancing, makeup, and outlandish costumes. Not really my thing, but I can’t fault anyone for getting down to “Poker Face.” Below the SNL video on the next page, you can see a preview clip of Gaga blubbering about her hard life and enemies and blah blah blah. It was really stupid so I added a nice GIF of her air-humping below that.

Tina Fey & Amy Poehler in ‘Jersey Floor’ with Jimmy Fallon

05.06.11 Written by Matt

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler guest starred in this “Jersey Floor” sketch that aired on last night’s episode of “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” I probably would really like this if (a) I didn’t hate NBC’s video player, (b) I didn’t have to sit through a commercial to get to the skit, and (c) it didn’t go on for an interminable NINE MINUTES. Don’t get me wrong, Fallon’s DJ Pauly D impression is downright uncanny, but it’s not worth sitting through five minutes of just to get to the part where Fey and Poehler finally show up.

However, it IS worth watching after Fey and Poehler appear, just for the inexplicable wonder of how good Tina Fey looks. She’s 40, pregnant, and done up in a wig, fake tan, and excessive eye makeup — yet she’s never looked hotter to me. The lesson here, ladies, is that men will like you more if you dress slutty. Even if you’re pregnant. Especially if you’re pregnant.

Tina Fey to Host ‘SNL’ While Pregnant

04.07.11 Written by Matt

Tina Fey confirmed to Oprah that she is presently five months pregnant with her second child. But she’s so busy! Couldn’t she have gotten Amy Poehler to be her surrogate? …anyone? I guess I’m the only one who saw Baby Mama on that flight.

The 30 Rock star is five months along, her rep confirms to PEOPLE… Fey, 40, shared the news during an appearance to promote her new book, Bossypants, and an upcoming Saturday Night Live reunion. Oprah’s chat with Fey is scheduled to air April 12.

According to my TI-85 calculator, Fey will be six months pregnant when she hosts “Saturday Night Live” on May 7th. That’s pretty pregnant, right? Like, all of the characters she plays in sketches will have to be pregnant or holding bags of groceries or sitting behind a computer. But whatever, as long as she writes and delivers some of the jokes on Weekend Update, we all win.

Tina Fey is not crazy

02.07.11 Written by Brandon

Tina Fey’s essay in this week’s issue of The New Yorker called “Confessions of a Juggler,” talks about her daily life juggling her job and motherhood. I’m pretty sure you don’t want me to go full-on vaginal Dave Barry here with a recap, but the piece really connects snugly when Fey observes that women of a certain age in comedy are always labeled as “crazy.” She writes:

“I know older men in comedy who can barely feed and clean themselves, and they still work. The women, though, they’re all ‘crazy.’ I have a suspicion — and hear me out, because this is a rough one — that the definition of ‘crazy’ in show business is a woman who keeps talking even after no one wants to f**k her anymore.” [Vulture]

Wow.  Let’s see if that is accurate. Is Alison Brie crazy? No. Aubrey Plaza? No. Roseanne is crazy. Paula Poundstone is pretty crazy, and I think Elayne Boosler sprang fully formed from the head of someone crazy. What about Chelsea Handler? She seems pretty crazy, but I would still sleep with her. I guess maybe there’s a transitional period?

Hopefully Tina won’t start being considered crazy any time soon.
