‘Arrested Development’ Updates!!!

07.19.10 Written by Matt

Four years after the show’s cancellation, people still get excited at the slightest mention of “Arrested Development,” so I figured I’d take some small news items tangentially related to the show, add exclamation points, and see what happens.

First off, David Cross has been added to the cast of Fox’s “Running Wilde,” the new sitcom from “AD” creator Mitch Hurwitz that stars Will Arnett (watch the trailer here). Cross will appear in the first seven episodes as Emily’s (Keri Russell’s) environmentalist fiancé, replacing Andrew Daly of “Eastbound & Down” in the role. [TV Squad]

Also, for what feels like the 800th time in three years, someone close to the project has confirmed an Arrested Development movie.

A Tale of Two Pilots

05.18.10 Written by Matt

Above is the trailer for “Running Wilde,” a Fox sitcom from “Arrested Development” creator Mitch Hurwitz that stars Will Arnett as a self-involved Hollywood tycoon and Keri Russell as the well-meaning woman who tries to change him for the better. I happen to think it looks good, because I like Arnett’s oily charm and jokes about tiny horses.

In contrast, below is the trailer for Paul Reiser’s new show, which was picked up by NBC. Here’s what he says to introduce the show:

Okay, this actually happened. Woman comes up to me. She says, “Hey! You’re, um, that guy! That guy from that show! With the girl! Oh, we used to love that show.” I said, “Thank you.” And she says, “You, you look exactly the same. Maybe a little fatter.” [*exasperated face at camera*] This is my life now.

Do you get it? It’s funny because our bodies decay as we age. Reiser goes on to describe his “life” — two kids with a predictably much-more-attractive sitcom wife — and how his friends are his wife’s friends’ husbands instead of men of his own choosing. Probably because no one would actually be friends with Paul Reiser. Except Jay Leno, of course.

PILOT FOR ‘TODD MARGARET’ ONLINE

02.22.10 Written by Matt

Back in December, the first couple minutes of “The Increasingly Bad Decisions of Todd Margaret” were leaked online. The show, written by and starring David Cross, was a pilot for Britain’s Channel 4 that was recently picked up for a full series run. But wait! Don’t fly to England just so you can watch the pilot — the entire first episode is right here online (first part above, second two videos below — and thanks to reader “kahlua groove” for the tip).

Anyway, watch and enjoy — you know, if you’ve got 25 minutes at work where you don’t actually need to do any work. The humor, based on awkward situations and the ineptitude of Cross’s titular character, sometimes falls flat when characters’ actions veer off into the unrealistic, but it mostly succeeds as a comedy. A helluva lot more than the average sitcom pilot in America. Isn’t that right, Michael Strahan?

DAMN YOU, BRITAIN!

12.03.09 Written by Matt

Back in June, I wrote about a new show for the UK’s Channel Four starring Will Arnett, David Cross, and Spike Jonze called “The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret.” It sounded awesome.cross-jonze-arnett

Here’s the first clip. It is awesome. You really can’t go wrong with Will Arnett swearing at people and David Cross lying like an awkward little weasel. HBO needs to buy the American rights to this with a quickness. I want more of this immediately. Like yesterday immediately.

WILL ARNETT TO JOIN ‘PARKS & REC’

11.17.09 Written by Matt

Will Arnett, famous for being the voice of GMC trucks and playing G.O.B. on “Arrested Development,” will join wife Amy Poehler on upcoming episodes of NBC’s “Parks and Recreation.” Michael Ausiello gushes:

An NBC spokesperson confirms that Arnett will guest star opposite real-life wife, Amy Poehler, on her creatively-resurgent comedy in early 2010. He’ll play a possible suitor for Poehler’s character, Leslie.

Incidentally, Arnett appears in the same episode that marks the arrival of Justin Theroux, who also happens to be playing a love interest for Leslie. You know what I’m smelling now?

Some sweaty balls?

Comedic fireworks!

Oh. That too, I guess.
